That visit to the shelter was tough for my daughter and me. We went there to drop off some belongings of our beloved black lab-greyhound mix whom we had to say goodbye to a few weeks earlier. While we were there, we decided to take a walk around the shelter — which is unlike any other shelter because besides dogs, they also have horses, goats, and rabbits. It was really something special!

We strolled around, checking everything out. Most of the animals barely noticed us. Then suddenly, from one of the dog runs, a black lab mix came bounding out. He didn’t bark but was very vocal and seemed to be “talking” to us in his own way. It was actually pretty funny! We gave him some attention and then continued exploring the facility. The dog ran alongside the fence like he was saying, “Where are you going? I’m right here. I’m your guy!”

When we came back, he started up with us again. My daughter was adamant that we couldn’t leave him there alone. A volunteer helped take him out of the kennel. The dog, weighing about 80 pounds, sat down on the grass and then climbed into my daughter’s lap. He faced her but tilted his head back to look at us and waved his paw like he was saying, “Hey, did you see that?” It was hilarious and totally impossible to say no to!

That Friday, we filled out the adoption paperwork. By Sunday, we were approved to pick him up on Monday. It was pure chance that both the dog and we were at the shelter at the same time.
Rescue dogs are amazing! If you’re looking for a new furry friend, I hope you’ll consider adopting one — because sometimes, miracles happen when you least expect them.
