They wore this color combination twice last season, once in Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons, and again against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day. The game against the Falcons resulted in a 22-17 win, while the game against the Steelers ended in a 29-10 victory. After the game against the Jaguars, the team will have worn this combination nine times during the Patrick Mahomes era (Rams 2018, Raiders 2021, Chargers 2021, Chargers 2022, Vikings 2023, Packers 2023, Falcons 2024, and Steelers 2024). Since 2018, the Chiefs have achieved a 6-2 record while wearing these uniforms.
The team has a somewhat unique history with these uniforms. Their recent success while wearing them is notable, but this particular combination is infamous for being worn during their Super Bowl I matchup against the Packers. Former Chiefs head coach Hank Stram was known to be somewhat superstitious about uniform combinations. After losing to Green Bay in Super Bowl I, Stram supposedly banned the white-on-white look, and the team didn’t wear it for nearly 20 years. It wasn’t until 1989, under then-Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer, that the team reintroduced this color combination, and it has been a fan-favorite ever since.
In early 2025, the NFL updated its rules regarding alternate uniforms. Teams are now allowed to wear alternate or throwback jerseys up to four times per season. The new regulations also permit teams to use a third alternate helmet, which can be paired with their alternate, classic, or Color Rush uniforms.
The NFL introduced “Rivalries” uniforms as a new initiative launched in collaboration with Nike in 2025. This program aims to create unique alternate uniforms featuring new helmet and jersey combinations that reflect a given team’s local culture and history. They will be worn once per season during divisional rivalry games. The first wave of these uniforms debuted for teams in the AFC East and NFC West, but the AFC West will get its own batch in 2027.
