ST.Mom Welcomes New Zealand’s First Quadruplets in 20 Years After Infertility Struggle

Christchurch, NZ — New Zealand’s first set of quadruplets in two decades—Quinn, Indie, Molly, and Hudson—were born at Christchurch Women’s Hospital on August 15 at 28 weeks and 4 days to Kendall Walker, 28, and Joshua MacDonald, of Timaru. Big brother Brooklyn (3) is already smitten. Photographer Cassandra English introduced the foursome in a series of tender portraits.

Doctors say the babies are a rare mix—a combination of identical and fraternal twins within the same set—and, despite arriving nearly three months early, they’re thriving. Naturally occurring quadruplets are exceedingly uncommon, with odds around 1 in 729,000.

Kendall and Joshua tried for three years to add to their family and suffered a loss along the way. A private specialist found multiple hurdles—PCOS, endometriosis, scarring, and complications from toxic shock syndrome—with the core problem that Kendall wasn’t ovulating. While awaiting surgery, she began clomiphene to stimulate ovulation—and soon learned she was pregnant.

An early 5-week scan showed a single baby. Three weeks later, a second scan revealed twins—and a third sac of uncertain viability. By the end of the exam, the sonographer confirmed four healthy heartbeats. “Four babies? Is that even possible?” Kendall recalled, still in shock.

Specialists advised selective reduction due to the risks of carrying four, but the couple chose to continue the pregnancy.
With more than 40 clinicians on hand, Kendall delivered by cesarean at 28+4. The babies weighed between 2.4 and 2.8 lb, each facing the usual preterm challenges but no immediate complications beyond those expected for their gestational age. The neonatal teams prepared families for a lengthy NICU journey.

Today, the quads are steadily growing, and their parents—who once hoped for just one more child—are embracing life with four. “We always imagined holding another baby,” Kendall said. “Getting four feels nothing short of amazing.”
