SAN.“SHE BROKE DOWN ON THE 18TH HOLE” — Dylan Dreyer’s Emotional Moment at a Celebrity Golf Event Left Everyone in Tears After a Heartfelt Confession About a Today Show Legend

NBC’s Today meteorologist Dylan Dreyer is no stranger to high-pressure moments — whether it’s delivering live forecasts to millions or juggling life as a mom of three. But during the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida, she faced a different kind of emotional storm — one that brought her to tears right on the golf course.
Dreyer, who participated in the celebrity golf event alongside stars like Alfonso Ribeiro, Ray Allen, Emmitt Smith, and Albert Pujols, said she was completely overcome when she approached the 18th hole — a touching tribute to her late friend, Tim Wakefield, the beloved Boston Red Sox pitcher who passed away in October 2023 from brain cancer at just 57.
Wakefield, a two-time World Series champion and one of the Red Sox’s most respected players, had long been part of the same tournament. His jersey number, 49, was displayed proudly near the final hole — a symbolic farewell to a man who had inspired so many on and off the field.
Dreyer shared the moment with her husband, Brian Fichera, who joined her for the event. As she teed off near Wakefield’s tribute, emotion took over. “A few months ago, we lost our dear friend #TimWakefield,” she wrote on Instagram. “They honored him with his number on hole 18 at #hgvlpga. @fishlense and I had tears in our eyes when my ball landed within 10 feet from this tribute. We miss you every day, Wake!!”
Her heartfelt post resonated deeply with fans, quickly racking up thousands of likes and comments. Many praised her vulnerability, calling the moment “beautiful” and “heartbreaking.” For Dreyer, it was a reminder of the fragility of life — and the power of friendship that endures even after loss.
But the emotional week didn’t end there. While at the event, Dreyer also spoke candidly about another emotional chapter — the health crisis of her Today colleague and mentor, Al Roker. When Roker suffered serious blood clots in 2022, the entire Today family feared the worst. “Our hearts were breaking for everything he was going through,” Dreyer told The U.S. Sun. “But in true Al fashion, he figured out what was wrong and fixed it. He’s the picture of health now.”

Dreyer, who temporarily filled in for Roker during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, said his recovery was nothing short of inspiring. “He reminds us that no matter what happens in life, just keep going,” she shared. “Prayers go a long way — we were all praying for him.”
Now, as Dreyer reflects on her own journey — from balancing motherhood and a busy broadcast career to honoring friends gone too soon — her outlook is one of gratitude and strength. “Moments like that,” she said of her tearful golf tribute, “make you realize how connected we all are, even when someone’s no longer with us.”
For Dylan Dreyer, it wasn’t just a golf tournament — it was a reminder that love, legacy, and friendship last far longer than any final score.
