f.‘One Battle After Another’ Scores $48.5M Global Opening, Biggest-Ever For PTA Amid Many Overseas Bests; ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Tops $600M.f

Updated: Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another came out swinging with a $48.5M global start, the biggest of the iconic filmmaker’s career. Included in the worldwide total, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer from Warner Bros grossed $26.1M in 74 international box office markets, slightly higher than the pre-opening projection.
This is also PTA’s biggest launch weekend in 68 of those overseas markets, including France, Germany, Italy, UK, Australia, Brazil and Mexico.

Overall overseas and in like-for-likes using today’s exchange rates, the film is tracking above Argo (+104%), Sinners (+55%), Killers of the Flower Moon (+10%) and The Departed (+8%).
Regionally, OBAA is PTA’s best opening across Europe (note that in France, the movie has a fantastic 4.7 out of 5 stars with critics/4.1 with auds on AlloCiné) and Latin America. In six LatAm markets, it’s already Anderson’s highest-grossing title ever.
The Middle East overperformed with $2.6M for the weekend.
And, in Asia, OBAA is playing on par with Killers of the Flower Moon amid strong reviews and word of mouth.
Overall, the Top 5 openers are: UK ($3.4M), France ($3.4M), Germany ($2M), Italy ($1.4M) and Saudi Arabia ($1.3M).

Still to release are Korea (October 1), Japan and Turkey (October 3) and China (October 17).
In Imax, the global take was $7.5M including $2.9M from 378 overseas screens.
Sticking with Warner Bros, which crossed $4B globally this weekend, New Line’s The Conjuring: Last Rites conjured another $15.4M from 76 overseas markets in the 4th session, taking the running international box office cume to $274.4M. Global is $436M.
The Top 5 to date overseas are: Mexico ($28.5M), UK ($22.1M), France ($18M), Brazil ($16.4M) and Germany ($14.4M).
Meanwhile, Japanese juggernaut Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle continued its charge this weekend, crossing $600M worldwide to become the 8th biggest movie of the year. Per Sony, the global cume is $605.4M through Sunday.

Of the total, $305.4M is from Crunchyroll/Sony markets. Infinity Castle added $19.2M this weekend, including $12.1M from 62 overseas markets.
The Top 5 offshore Crunchyroll/Sony markets are Mexico ($16.6M, No. 1 all-time anime), Germany ($12.5M), France ($12.3M), India ($9M, No. 1 all-time anime) and UK ($8.4M).
Another anime, MAPPA’s Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, is capturing hearts overseas. Released by Toho in Japan on September 19, the film’s first 13 overseas markets via Crunchyroll/Sony have grossed $7M for a running global total of $26M. CR/Sony release in North America on October 24 in step with such markets as France, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Spain and the UK.
Also in Asia, Korea‘s Oscar submission and buzzy Venice title No Other Choice from Park Chan-wook debuted at No. 1 in the home market with $7.5M.
