In an exclusive interview with Athlete Unfiltered magazine , WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner – who made international headlines after being arrested and imprisoned in Russia – caused a stir when she bluntly declared that she was ready to leave the United States if she felt “no longer respected.”
“I am not a propaganda tool. I am not a symbol to be erected and then torn down. If they continue to judge me, ridicule me, use me for political purposes… I would rather live in the place that once held me than live here as an enemy.”
Griner’s statement shocked many , especially since she had spent 10 months in Russia for illegally carrying cannabis oil – a case that prompted the United States and President Joe Biden to directly intervene in exchange for her freedom through a famous prisoner swap deal.
However, Griner now reveals:
In Russia, she “was treated more clearly” : “At least they didn’t pretend to support me and then turn their backs.”
After returning to the United States, she was attacked by conservative media , who mocked her gender , and called for her to be banned from playing for the national team .
“They freed me to be a hero for a week, then treated me like I was a burden to the nation.”
Griner is now expected to be a member of the US women’s basketball team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. But after this shocking announcement, many began to question:
