kem. It was a rough visit to the shelter for my daughter and me. We went to drop off items belonging to our sweet black lab-greyhound that we’d had to put down a few weeks before. We decided to check out the shelter while we were there. It’s not your standard shelter. This place has horses and goats and bunnies as well. There’s lots to see! We’re walking around, checking it out. None of the animals are paying us much attention. Then, along one of the dog runs this black lab mix comes bounding out along his run. He doesn’t bark but gets very vocal and talkative. It’s funny actually! We give him some attention then begin walking to check out more of the facility. He runs along the run as if to say “where ya going? I’m right here. I’m your guy!”We check more of the facility and this dog sees us coming back and starts with us again. My daughter is insistent that we can’t leave him here. We have a volunteer take him out of the kennels. This 100 pound girl sits in the grass and then this 80 pound lab climbs into her lap. He’s facing her but tilts his head back to look at us. Then he waves his paw at us. It’s hilarious! How can you say no to that?We fill out the paperwork that day, a Friday. On Sunday we are approved to pick up our new boy on Monday. Pure chance brought both that dog and us to the shelter at the same time.Rescue dogs are awesome! Hope you’ll consider the rescue option if you’re looking for a new pet.

That visit to the shelter was tough for my daughter and me. We went there to drop off some belongings of our beloved black lab-greyhound mix whom we had to say goodbye to a few weeks earlier. While we were there, we decided to take a walk around the shelter — which is unlike any other shelter because besides dogs, they also have horses, goats, and rabbits. It was really something special!

We strolled around, checking everything out. Most of the animals barely noticed us. Then suddenly, from one of the dog runs, a black lab mix came bounding out. He didn’t bark but was very vocal and seemed to be “talking” to us in his own way. It was actually pretty funny! We gave him some attention and then continued exploring the facility. The dog ran alongside the fence like he was saying, “Where are you going? I’m right here. I’m your guy!”

When we came back, he started up with us again. My daughter was adamant that we couldn’t leave him there alone. A volunteer helped take him out of the kennel. The dog, weighing about 80 pounds, sat down on the grass and then climbed into my daughter’s lap. He faced her but tilted his head back to look at us and waved his paw like he was saying, “Hey, did you see that?” It was hilarious and totally impossible to say no to!

That Friday, we filled out the adoption paperwork. By Sunday, we were approved to pick him up on Monday. It was pure chance that both the dog and we were at the shelter at the same time.

Rescue dogs are amazing! If you’re looking for a new furry friend, I hope you’ll consider adopting one — because sometimes, miracles happen when you least expect them.
