In the fast-paced world of late-night television, unexpected moments and drama can unfold quickly. Jimmy Kimmel, a seasoned host known for his sharp wit and political commentary, was no stranger to controversy. However, one particular event this fall put him at the center of a whirlwind of headlines, leaving both fans and industry insiders questioning his future on  TV.

On September 17, Kimmel was preparing for what he thought would be another routine taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. But within hours, the show would be pulled from the airwaves by ABC and Disney, in a decision that shocked viewers and Kimmel himself.

In the days that followed, a cascade of events unfolded, and Kimmel found himself confronting an unexpected suspension.

Kimmel learned about his suspension in a dramatic fashion and spoke about it on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. While sitting in his dressing room just hours before filming, he received an unusual phone call from ABC executives. The call left him stunned and uncertain about his next steps.

It was about 3:00. We tape our show at 4:30. I’m in my office, typing away as I usually do. I get a phone call, it’s ABC. They say they want to talk to me. This is unusual. As far as I knew, they didn’t even know I was doing a show previous to this, so I have like five people who work in my office with me, so the only private place to go is the bathroom.

So I go into the bathroom. And I’m on the phone with the ABC executives and they say, ‘Listen, we wanna take the temperature down. We’re concerned about what you’re gonna say tonight and we decided that the best route is to take the show off the air tonight. 

The reason for the sudden suspension? Comments Kimmel made about former President Donald Trump and the controversial assassination of activist Charlie Kirk. These comments sparked outrage, particularly among conservative circles, and drew the attention of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). FCC Chairman Brendan Carr voiced concern over Kimmel’s remarks, threatening Disney and ABC with potential investigations if the host wasn’t pulled from the air.

This was the catalyst for the suspension. As Kimmel walked through his studio, an unusual sense of foreboding began to set in. His team was still unaware of the impending decision.

I said I don’t think that’s a good idea, and they said, ‘Well, we think it’s a good idea.’ And then there was a vote and I lost the vote. So I put my pants back on and I walked out to my office and I called in some of the executive producers, and there were about nine people in there, and I said, ‘They’re pulling the show off the air.’

While Kimmel was processing the shock of the suspension, the aftermath quickly spread beyond the walls of ABC. Fans of the show voiced their outrage, and protests erupted in front of Disney’s studio lot, with many threatening to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions and Disney vacations as a protest.

The move resulted in major fallout, with Disney’s stock prices taking a hit and nearly two million subscribers dropping their memberships.

Despite his uncertainty, Kimmel’s return to the show was always in the works. On September 23, Jimmy Kimmel Live! made its comeback after a six-day break, but there were still some lingering effects of the suspension.

The show was not available on Sinclair Broadcasting and NexStar affiliate stations until September 26. Meanwhile, Kimmel was candid about the emotional rollercoaster he experienced. “I was convinced we were never coming back,” he admitted.

In the following days, more details about the situation emerged, including the fact that Kimmel had been handed a list of demands by Sinclair Broadcasting in exchange for his return to the airwaves. When the show was reinstated, those demands were reportedly disregarded.

The road to Kimmel’s comeback wasn’t entirely smooth. Following the suspension, former Disney CEO Michael Eisner publicly criticized the company’s handling of the situation, further fueling the debate. “Where has all the leadership gone?” Eisner wrote on social media, questioning Bob Iger’s decisions. This public rebuke from Eisner is believed to have played a role in Kimmel’s reinstatement, as Iger’s frustration with the criticism ultimately led to a reversal in the suspension.
