ST.“Catch Him!” — Dad Helps Deliver Baby on ER Floor After Lightning-Fast Labor

Manhattan, Kansas — July 24, 2017 — It was supposed to be a routine early-morning hospital run. But for Jes and Travis Hogan, that July morning turned into a scene straight out of a movie — one filled with panic, adrenaline, and the purest joy imaginable.

Jes, a mom of five, had spent nearly a week riding waves of contractions that kept starting and stopping. She and her husband had already made one fruitless trip to the hospital earlier that week. But at 3 a.m. on this particular morning, Jes jolted awake — this time, it felt different.

“It was one long, strange contraction,” she recalled. “Then suddenly, my water broke — and I knew this was it.”

Within minutes, Travis helped her into the car. The drive to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas, was a blur of flashing hazard lights, deep breathing, and prayers that they would make it in time. But their sixth baby had other plans.

As soon as they pulled up to the emergency room, Jes could feel the baby’s head crowning. “I told him, ‘Travis, catch him!’” she said.

They barely made it through the second set of automatic doors when Jes collapsed onto the floor. In that moment, instinct took over. With the help of an ER nurse rushing toward them, Travis knelt down, reached out — and caught his newborn son right there on the hospital floor.

“He came out screaming and perfect,” Jes said, her voice trembling with emotion. “It was the most chaotic, beautiful moment of our lives.”

The baby, later named Maxwell, weighed a healthy 7 pounds, 6 ounces. The couple’s birth photographer, Tammy Karin, who arrived just moments after the delivery, captured the raw aftermath — a mix of shock, laughter, and overwhelming love.

In one unforgettable photo, Travis is seen cradling his son, tears streaming down his face, while Jes sits on the floor, smiling through the exhaustion. “He was so calm, so steady,” Jes said of her husband. “I couldn’t have done it without him.”

Hospital staff were stunned by the lightning-fast delivery — and inspired by the couple’s composure. “We see all kinds of situations in the ER,” one nurse said, “but this was pure magic.”

The Hogans later shared their story online, and within hours, it went viral — thousands of parents commenting that it reminded them how unpredictable and miraculous birth can be.

Jes summed it up best: “You can plan everything, time everything, think you’ve seen it all — and then life throws you a beautiful, wild surprise.”
