Brandon Aubrey Keeps Raising the Bar – And the Distance – for NFL Kickers
ARLINGTON, Texas – When Brandon Aubrey lined up for a 61-yard field goal midway through the second quarter against the Washington Commanders, there were no gasps from the crowd. No tension.
No one holding their breath. That’s just what it’s become with Aubrey – booming leg, calm expression, split uprights.
Business as usual.
Except it’s not. With that kick, Aubrey notched his fifth career make from at least 60 yards, setting a new NFL record. And he made it look easy – so easy, the league’s own social media crew couldn’t help but caption the highlight with “with ease.”
Quite a welcome stat line for a guy in just his third season. The Cowboys rolled over Washington 44-22, but it was Aubrey’s right leg that kept rewriting history.
GOAT Talk? CeeDee Might Be On to Something
Back in Week 2, after Aubrey knocked in a 64-yard missile to push the Cowboys into overtime (and eventually a win over the Giants), CeeDee Lamb called him a “GOAT.” At the time, it sounded more like a teammate hyping his guy.
But now? You could argue Lamb was just ahead of the curve.
After Sunday’s performance in Week 7, Aubrey doesn’t just have a few impressive kicks – he’s stacking up resume-building records that position him as one of the most dangerous weapons in the NFL.
“It feels good,” Aubrey said postgame. “It feels like I’ve set myself apart with a particular set of skills, I guess, that are hard to replicate.”
And you can’t argue with that. **Five kicks of 60+ yards?
** That’s absurd. No one else in league history can match it.
Not Justin Tucker. Not Harrison Butker.
No one.
From Long Shot to Long Range
Here’s the thing – this isn’t just about leg strength. Aubrey’s got a technician-like consistency that’s equally impressive.
Before today’s generation of hybrid athlete-specialists, a kicker like Aubrey would’ve been an anomaly. But now, he’s raising the stakes for what we expect from the position.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has seen a lot of kickers trot out during his tenure – some great, some forgettable – but Aubrey makes 60-yard attempts feel routine.
“I tell you it doesn’t surprise me, and that’s ironic,” Jones said postgame. “When we step out there from 60-plus yards, it doesn’t surprise me anymore.”
Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer couldn’t help but smile when reflecting on it.
“Let’s talk about the weapon,” Schottenheimer said. “What’s the record, most 60-yard field goals in a career?
The guy is incredible. Dak and I kind of laugh because, literally, when we get the ball, it’s like – he’s like, ‘50 [yard line].’
I’m like, ‘Yep, 50.’”
Aubrey has literally changed how Dallas gameplans field position – if they’re across midfield, he’s in range.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves
Let’s run through the high points of Aubrey’s remarkable – and still early – career:
- 91 made field goals since entering the NFL in 2023 – most in the league.
- 100 total attempts – also most in the league.
- 91% accuracy – third-best among kickers with at least 70 attempts.
- 29 of those makes from 50 yards or more – first in the league.
- Five from 60 or more – most all time.
- A 65-yarder in Week 3 of the 2024 season – the longest in Cowboys history and second-longest in NFL history.
- A perfect, record-setting streak of 35 straight made field goals to begin his career.
In a league where kicking is often defined more by disaster than dominance, Aubrey is flipping the script.
“My goal has always been to be at 90%,” Aubrey said. “So, we’re doing just good enough to meet that goal. Hopefully I can keep that going for my career.”
“I Expect to Make It”
For most kickers, a 60-yard field goal is a career highlight. For Aubrey? It’s just another Sunday.
He doesn’t approach kicks like circus tricks – he treats them like practice reps. Technically sound, mentally calm, always focused.
“It feels like that is now well within my range,” Aubrey said of his 60-plus yard kicks. “It’s something I expect myself to make, so it feels like I’m doing my process and treating it like any other kick.”
His only complaint? The celebration.
“My long snapper definitely hits my head harder,” Aubrey joked.
The Star at the 50
At AT&T Stadium, midfield isn’t just a line on the turf – it’s the trigger point. It’s where Aubrey warms up, locks in, and gets ready to strike. Schottenheimer joked about it, but there’s serious tactical value in knowing your kicker can deliver from midfield with confidence.
With every 60-yarder drilled and every high-pressure situation handled like clockwork, Aubrey’s not just chasing kicking records – he’s building a legacy inside of three seasons.
And the way he’s going, that legacy’s only getting longer. Just like his kicks.
