Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Files Appeal, Claims His Hand Gesture Toward Jets Fans Was a “Thumbs Heart,” Not an Obscene Sign

Dallas, October 8, 2025

Just days after being fined $250,000 by the NFL for what was described as an “obscene hand gesture” toward New York Jets fans, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has officially filed an appeal, insisting that the incident was a misunderstanding caused by camera angles and misinterpretation.

The controversy began during the Cowboys’ 37–22 victory over the Jets at MetLife Stadium, when footage showed Jones in the owner’s suite making a gesture that appeared to involve his middle finger. The video spread quickly across social media, sparking outrage and leading to swift disciplinary action from the NFL.

However, Jones has since defended himself, stating that he was not flipping off Jets fans, but rather forming a “thumbs heart” gesture — a popular hand signal of appreciation among younger fans.

“I wasn’t trying to disrespect anyone,” Jones said in his statement to reporters on Tuesday. “What I did was a playful ‘heart’ gesture with my thumb and middle finger, something my grandkids taught me. Unfortunately, from the angle it was filmed, it looked completely different. I understand how it could be misinterpreted, but there was no bad intent.”

According to Jones’ legal team, several alternative camera angles are being submitted as evidence to the league office, showing that his fingers were curved inward — consistent with the “heart” shape trend seen on social media platforms like TikTok.

The NFL has confirmed receipt of the appeal and is reviewing the new footage before making a final decision later this week.

Fans remain divided: some believe Jones’ explanation, while others argue that the gesture was clearly inappropriate. Regardless of the outcome, the situation has sparked debate about intent, perception, and the viral power of a single image in today’s media landscape.

As the Cowboys prepare for Week 6, Jerry Jones’ case stands as a curious example of how even a small hand motion can turn into a nationwide headline in the NFL spotlight.
