Jenifer, George Strait’s first child, was just 13 years old when she was killed in an automobile accident on June 25, 1986, outside San Marcos, Texas. The tragedy struck at a time when George’s career was soaring, and it changed him forever.
“I think that’s when Dad stopped chasing fame and started singing from a deeper place,” Bubba continued. “People always said his music felt more real after that — and they were right. Every song since then has carried a part of her.”

Over time, those songs became part of the Strait family’s way of keeping Jenifer close — not as a wound, but as a legacy of love. Even now, at 72, George continues to carry that spirit every time he steps onto a stage.
“When he sings “I Saw God Today,” you can see it — that’s not performance, that’s prayer,” Bubba said. “He’s singing to her, for her, through her. Dad doesn’t need to talk about pain. He turns it into beauty.”
Fans who have followed George Strait’s journey know that his strength has always come from his family — from Norma, his wife of more than 50 years, and from the faith that carried them through the unimaginable. After Jenifer’s passing, the family founded the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation, which continues to support children’s charities across Texas in her honor.
