Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson died by suicide Tuesday in Florida at the age of 45, police told TMZ Sports.
A source from the family confirmed news of the tragedy to TMZ Sports Sept. 23. The source noted Johnson was struggling with mental health issues and the potential effects of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), which is caused by repeated head injuries.
Johnson did everything he could to help people both on and off the field, the family source told the outlet.

Johnson began to flourish at Auburn University, where he won SEC Player of the Year Honors.
The Bengals picked Johnson in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played sparingly during his first two seasons, but his career took off in season three. In 2005, Johnson played a vital role in getting the Bengals to the playoffs for the first time in 15 years.
