In 2017, after a fifteen–year absence, Shania Twain returned with one of the rawest and most gut–wrenching songs of her career. Tucked at the very end of her comeback album Now was a track unlike anything else she had ever recorded: “Soldier.” It wasn’t just another ballad — it was a brave tribute to the men and women who sacrifice everything in times of war, and to the families left behind holding onto hope.

Written by Twain herself, “Soldier” unfolds through the voice of a woman waiting desperately for her loved one to come home. Its lyrics ache with longing: “Has anybody seen my soldier, standing all alone? Has anybody seen my soldier just trying to get home?” In those lines lies the universal heartbreak of wartime — the unanswered prayers, the sleepless nights, and the fear that goodbye might be forever.

Shania admitted the song nearly broke her while writing it. Speaking to Access Hollywood Live, she revealed: “I cried so much. I would write a few words, and then I would start crying… it was very emotional. The song is all about letting go and maybe being the last time you ever see someone.” For an artist known for her strength and resilience, “Soldier” was proof that even legends bleed when faced with the pain of goodbye.

The song’s emotional impact was so undeniable that it found its way into the 2017 film Thank You for Your Service, a harrowing portrait of American soldiers returning from Iraq and struggling to re–enter civilian life. Paired with Shania’s voice, the film’s storylines carried even heavier weight — a reminder that the battlefield doesn’t always end overseas.

Adding to its legacy, Twain released an emotional music video interlacing her live tour performances with footage of soldiers reuniting with their families. On Twitter, she explained: “My song ‘Soldier’ is about the heartbreak of having to say goodbye to a loved one. I wanted to make this video to honor the men and women who serve their country every day.”

For fans, the video was impossible to watch without tears. For Shania, it was her way of using music to honor sacrifice, grief, and the quiet courage of waiting.

In a career filled with global anthems and stadium anthems, “Soldier” stands apart as something braver, deeper, and heartbreakingly human. It’s not just a song — it’s Shania Twain’s salute to those who gave everything and to the loved ones who still whisper a silent prayer for their safe return.
