When Brock Purdy went down with an injury after the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 1 game, veteran quarterback Mac Jones had the opportunity to once again be a starter in the league. The 2021 first-round pick has taken full advantage of that opportunity, playing the best football of his career in the three games he started.

Now, on track to start a fourth game, Jones has the opportunity to completey rewrite his narrative.

Purdy, who is still believed to be QB1 when healthy, hasn’t returned to practice yet. That puts Jones in line to start for San Francisco on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Like the Niners, the Buccaneers are 4-1, so getting a win will be a tall task.

However, if Jones can lead the team to another victory, it would go a long way for him.

Mac Jones could rewrite narrative with win against Buccaneers

Jones hasn’t lost yet this season, leading the 49ers to wins over the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, and Los Angeles Rams. The veteran passer isn’t just a passsnger in these wins, though, he’s an integral part of the victories. Through three games, Jones has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 905 yards and six touchdowns, with just one interception.

On Sunday, though, the Niners will be playing a Bucs team led by Baker Mayfield. After five weeks, Mayfield has made himself an early MVP candidate, engineering game-winning drives in all four of Tampa Bay’s wins. The Bucs offense can put up points, which means Jones might have to win in a shootout.

If the 49ers quarterback does that, and moves to 4-0 on the season, not only will there be calls for him to remain the starter for San Francisco, he’ll be viewed as a top candidate for quarterback-needy teams. Jones is only 27 years old and is in his fifth season. Plenty of teams would be looking to acquire him if the 49ers are open to moving him.

He has already started to flip the script on his career, and a win on Sunday would complete that process.
