Prior to the Week 5 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said his team had to “earn the right” to execute a blockbuster deal ahead of the NFL trade deadline.
With the win, and in light of a 4-1 record and the top spot in the NFC West, it appears as if the banged-up Niners have done just that.Despite a slew of injuries, Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have managed to keep San Francisco trending upward, although it hasn’t exactly been an easy process. Arguably the biggest setback was losing All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa to a season-ending ACL tear in Week 3, and there hasn’t exactly been an on-roster replacement to help make up the sizable gap.
So, understandably, the thought of Lynch searching for a would-be trade partner for a defensive end makes plenty of sense, right?
Well, on Thursday ahead of the 49ers’ Week 6 road bout against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lynch confirmed what fans have been wanting to know.
John Lynch confirms 49ers have been trying to trade for a pass-rusher
The GM spoke on KNBR 680’s Murph & Markus Show and was asked specifically if the Niners had any plans to trade for a pass-rusher by the Nov. 4 deadline.
While Lynch didn’t exactly admit any deal was imminent, he did more than just leave the proverbial door open.
“We’ll see,” the GM said. “I’m having a lot of good and productive conversations.”
Perhaps there is a little sense of urgency after the Baltimore Ravens traded pass-rusher Odafe Oweh to the Los Angeles Chargers earlier in the week, potentially signifying a run on players over the next few weeks.
Or, potentially, Lynch is still waiting on other teams to see whether or not they’ll commit to being sellers by the deadline.
As for truly replacing Bosa, even Lynch admitted that’s not a pound-for-pound move. You’re not going to find a player that’s gong to replace Nick Bosa,” the GM said. “But can you find someone that makes the group better so we’re collectively better… There’s so many variables and you gotta find a partner that makes sense. There’s plenty of discussions.”
Either way, it sounds as if Lynch and the Niners have been active on the trade front, although it takes two teams to execute such a deal, and said deal has to work out for both sides. And there’s both the short- and long-term ramifications of doing so, too.
Those factors come into play, and they’ll assuredly be worth monitoring between now and the NFL trade deadline on Nov. 4.
